Tesco compromise boosts chances of new Everton stadium

The chance of Everton getting planning permission for a new stadium has been boosted by an announcement made by Tesco retail chain.

Tesco has agreed to scale down the size of the superstore connected to Everton FC's proposed new stadium in Kirkby by 25 per cent, Liverpool's Daily Post has revealed.

The Toffees' expansion plans had certainly hit a sticky patch until Tesco came up with the compromise.

Liverpool's planning committee was poised to formally object to the Kirkby project, but yesterday it postponed making the decision due to the "significant" changes proposed by the supermarket giant.

The council's main objections to the Kirkby scheme was that it was too large and, as it features 50 shops, was likely to have an adverse impact on shopping centres in their areas.

The Daily Post also revealed that the Goodison club is looking to attract a £60m sponsorship package for a 15-year naming rights deal for the proposed new 50,000-seater ground.

Arsenal helped finance their recent move from the marble-halled Highbury Stadium by selling the name of their new ground to the highest bidder.
