Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp's home was raided with an unlawful warrant, the High Court heard.
Police raided the home of the Pompey boss and his wife Sandra using an unlawful warrant after they had tipped off the media, Alun Jones QC told the court.
The Redknapps are calling for a judicial review into the dawn raid on their home in Dorset in November that lead to the manager being arrested and then bailed by police investigating football corruption.
Mr Jones argued that the court had "no power" to issue the warrant because of the nature of the material being sought by the police.
He also said that the media had been "deliberately informed" by the police.
But lawyers for the police claim that the warrant was valid and that the search was conducted on legitimate grounds.
They also denied that the media had been tipped off in the run up to the operation.
At the time of his arrest, Redknapp said he was disappointed in the way the raid had occurred and believed he was only arrested because he was a "high-profile" name in football.
