Younger football supporters are being priced out of attending matches, it has been claimed.
According to Jon Keen, the deputy chairman of the Football Supporters Federation, the absence of young people is resulting in poor atmospheres.
He said increased television revenues should lead to clubs charging less for tickets and creating a better atmosphere.
"People are being a lot more picky about which matches they can afford to attend these days, and it's changing the profile of the crowd. The younger people can't get to matches so we're seeing a decreased atmosphere at games," he explained.
"A lot of people in football are really despairing about where the next generation of football fans is coming from," he added.
Mr Keen said there was no reason why clubs could not sell cheaper tickets to encourage a good atmosphere.
"What gives English football such a great selling point is the passion of the ground," he said.
Aston Villa have increased ticket prices by about £4 a game for next season and have stopped concession prices on matchdays in the Trinity Road and Doug Ellis Stands.
Nicola Keye, head of consumer sales, told the BBC that this was not to stop young supporters going to games.
