England will not play Scotland in a friendly match until at least 2010.
It comes after the English Football Association said that it would like to resurrect the tie at Wembley in May.
However, Scotland boss George Burley did not think the timing was right in relation to what he has planned for his squad.
The idea was then taken to England manager Fabio Capello, but he ruled out any dates in 2009.
"As Gordon Smith [Scottish FA chief executive] has said, there is certainly a desire on our part to find a suitable date to arrange a fixture with Scotland in the future," FA director of communications Adrian Bevington told the BBC.
"However, we won't be in a position to do so for quite some time. We were of course ready to host Scotland next month, following previous positive conversations, but unfortunately Scotland were unable to take up that fixture," he added.
Plans for a resurrection of the four nations tournament, with England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have been put back to at least 2011 due to fixture congestion.
