Blatter wants to go ahead with foreign player rule

Fifa president Sepp Blatter has plans to press on with his idea of limiting the number of foreign players at a club.

The plans have already been met with disapproval from Uefa and the EU but Blatter is determined to move on.

He is calling for national associations to reach a gentleman's agreement which will see all clubs limited to having no more than five foreign players.

"Blatter doesn't want a war with Uefa or to anger the EU but this is a point of principle for him," a FIFA official told the BBC.

"When he became president he made a promise on this and he sees this as a major legacy of his time in office.

"He believes he can get a gentleman's agreement with all the national associations."

However, Uefa president Michel Platini has already made it clear that he does not support the proposals and the EU said that such a rule would be against European laws.
