The Premier League is seeking damages from two firms which provide cards that allow football fans to watch matches broadcast on foreign TV stations.
A court case has been launched against QC Leisure and AV Station, which provide the cards to decode Greek and North African channels.
Both firms claim that their actions are legal under European law. However, the Premier League described them as a "good old-fashioned rip-off".
"It is about dealers making a fat profit. All they do is get hold of a foreign card and apply a substantial mark up of up to 100 per cent," said James Mellor QC, representing the Premier League.
"How do they get hold of these cards? They get them through deception," he added.
QC Leisure and AV Station claim that European laws mean that goods can move freely throughout the European Union, so the cards can be sold here in the UK.
