Football Clubs News

Barnsley's chairman has announced that he will step down at the end of the current season.

Gordon Shepherd announced, via a statement on the club website, that he does no intend to stay on in his current role.

He told fans that he had intended to step down at the end of last season but was persuaded to stay on.

Mr Shepherd's announcement came before Barnsley's crucial Championship match with Hull City, which the home side lost 3-1.

Barnsley currently sit just four points off the relegation zone after crashing out of the FA Cup at the semi-final stage.

Mr Shepherd joined Barnsley as a director in 2004 and took over as chairman when Peter Risdale left the club.

His tenure has been largely successful, with Barnsley gaining promotion to the Championship and reaching that FA Cup semi final.

The chairman announced that he will also step down as a club director when the season comes to an end.
