FA crackdown on religious abuse

New rules may soon be introduced that will see football clubs docked points if fans engage in religious abuse.

The Football Association would be given the power to dock points from clubs, negatively affecting their league standing.

It follows a meeting of the FA, the Metropolitan Police, the Board of Deputies of British Jews and the National Association of Muslim Police, reports the Guardian.

The present rules mean that clubs can ban fans for engaging in such behaviour, but the FA wants to have more power on the issue.

"We now have a five-point action plan that will look at how stewards manage incidents, the way grounds are policed, how the FA monitors incidents, strengthening reporting mechanisms and the role of referees," said Lucy Faulkner, equality manager at the FA.

The hope is that by introducing stiffer penalties, the abuse will stop, making football matches more family-friendly.
