Juve set for new stadium

A new stadium for Juventus has been given the go-ahead by the club's board of directors.

The new arena, which is expected to cost in the region of €105 million, will be built on the site of one of the club's former homes, the Stadio delle Alpi.

The Old Lady, who lie in third place in Serie A, are currently sharing with fellow Turin side Torino at the Stadio Olimpico di Torino, which hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2006 Winter Olympics.

Stadio delle Alpi, which was opened as recently as 1990, was deemed inappropriate for the holding of football matches back in 2006.

One of the reasons for this is that the running track around the pitch spoils the atmosphere.

Chief executive Jean-Claude Blanc has been given a mandate to complete the project by the club's board.

It is thought that the new stadium will ready in time for the start of the 2011/2012 season.
