FA to review Cardiff's Uefa Cup case

The FA has promised to review the fate of Cardiff in the wake of Uefa president Michel Platini's comments that Uefa would intervene unless the issue was resolved in the Wales-based club's favour.

As the rules stand, Cardiff would not be entered as one of England's representatives in the Uefa Cup if they won the tournament as Welsh clubs can only qualify through their own competitions.

However, a spokesman for the FA has admitted that English football's governing body is looking at the possibility of changing its stance.

"The FA is considering its position on European qualification for the winners of the FA Cup," he commented.

"Historically, the understanding of the FA has been that Welsh clubs were ineligible for the Uefa Cup should they have won the FA Cup. The question of eligibility for Welsh clubs has not arisen for many years so it is only now appropriate for us to look at the issue afresh."

The spokesperson also said the association was "aware" of Platini's opinion, but that a firm decision had yet to be made.
