Southend get go-ahead for new stadium

Southend United are set to leave Roots Hall, the ground they have called home since 1955.

Club officials have revealed that permission has been granted to construct a new 22,000 capacity stadium at Fossetts Farm.

Planning permission was already granted in 2007 but Southend had to wait on the outcome of an inquiry before going ahead.

"The decision issued by the secretary of state approved the club's new stadium plans," chairman Ron Martin said on the club website.

"This is without a doubt a pivotal moment in Southend United's history.

"Once the final points of the decision notice have been considered we will waste no time in commencing construction," he continued.

The move will almost double Southend United's capacity for home matches as the current stadium holds just 12,392 fans.
