The yellow card shown to Celtic goalkeeper Artur Boruc after the match against Hibernian at the weekend has been upheld.
The Polish keeper received a booking after the final whistle for gestures made towards the home fans.
Celtic manager Gordon Strachan expressed his opinion that the booking was unfair and called on the Scottish Football Association to clarify the rules.
The SFA has responded by stating that the referee was within his rights to show Boruc a yellow card if the player was judged to have made gestures which were "intended to incite or ridicule opposing spectators".
Referee Iain Brines has also stood by his decision to book the goalkeeper.
"I clearly saw Boruc make a number of gestures towards the home spectators, using his hands and arms in a fashion which could only be described as inflammatory, provoking hostile reaction from the terracings," he told the BBC.
Celtic currently sit second in the Scottish Premier League, just two points behind leaders Rangers.
