FA to discuss 39th game

The board of the Football Association is gathering for a scheduled meeting today (February 21st), with the Premier League's 39th match proposals sure to be top of the agenda.

English football's governing body will have its first real opportunity to discuss the controversial plans, which would see an additional round of Premier League matches played abroad.

Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore will attend the meeting and is likely to push the FA to at least consider the idea.

It is widely anticipated that the association will at least agree to take part in a year-long consultation.

However, MPs have been busy today urging the FA to dismiss the proposals as soon as possible.

A Commons motion has been tabled, with MPs claiming: "[The] domestic football calendar is already extremely congested and a further fixture would add to the fatigue of players."

Fifa president Sepp Blatter poured cold water on the proposals earlier this month when he declared it would never go ahead while he was president and hinting that the plans could harm England's chances of hosting the 2018 World Cup.
