Quota plans hit a snag

Plans to introduce a quota on the number of foreign players teams are allowed to field have been shot down by the European Commission.

Football's governing body Fifa has been discussing proposals to make it illegal for a club to field more than five foreigners at one time.

Fifa president Sepp Blatter is behind the 6+5 rule, which he believes would help to restore the identity of European clubs.

However, an EC spokesman appeared to banish the proposal to the scrapheap.

"The implementation by Fifa of a 6+5 rule in the European Union would violate EU law," he said.

"The Commission is not considering any change to allow Fifa to push forward this idea. Fifa is aware of this fact," continued the spokesman.

Fifa has failed to comment on the latest development but Blatter seems intent on pushing ahead with the quota system.

He is due to present the proposals to the Fifa Congress in Australia on May 29th and May 30th.
