Fergie and fans 'don't know what's going on'

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has reacted angrily to the revelation that the Premier League programme could be extended to 39 matches - as he says the proposals should have been discussed internally before being announced to the public.

"What disappoints me is Manchester United chief executive David Gill said 'keep this quiet, we're discussing it' and then it's in the papers," he said.

"These issues should be discussed internally by clubs before they come to this position we are now in but until I speak to David Gill again I have nothing more to say about it."

Meanwhile, fans have been almost unanimous to their opposition to the plans, which would see the extra round of fixtures played in cities across the world.

"We have no doubt whatsoever that the vast majority of supporters are against this and we believe it would drag the Premier League into the realms of farce," said Malcolm Clarke, the chairman of the Football Supporters' Federation.

The Sun successfully encapsulated the public's mood by leading with the headline: WHAT ON EARTH IS GOING ON?
