Uefa aims for pay TV ruling

Uefa is going to the European Court in order to get the knockout stages of the European Championships on pay TV in Britain.

The European football governing body wants knockout matches to appear on pay broadcasters, such as Sky and Setanta.

The exception would be matches that involve British teams, with these ties set to remain on terrestrial TV.

However, if Uefa win, it will go against the 1996 Broadcasting Act, which states that terrestrial channels are guaranteed the rights to the World Cup, the European Championships and the FA Cup final.

The act also covers other sports, with tennis' Wimbledon tournament and the Olympics also being free to view.

If Uefa get the go-ahead to sell tournament rights to pay TV channels, it is sure to land a bumper pack package.

However, the governing body denies that this is the motivation behind what will prove to be a controversial move.
