Transfer window breaks all records

This season's Premier League January transfer window saw more money spent on new players than ever before.

Deloitte has reported that around £150 million was spent during the window, far more than any of the other major European leagues.

It compares to the £90 million figure recorded last year and the £80 million which changed hands in 2006.

According to Deloitte, the numbers should not come as a surprise as the money from improved television contracts is beginning to filter through to the clubs.

Chelsea were the biggest spenders, forking out £27 million, £15 million of which went towards securing the services of French striker Nicolas Anelka.

Tottenham Hotspur followed, spending £20 million on new players, with Jonathan Woodgate just one of a number of players to head to White Hart Lane.

Other transfers that caught the eye were Jermaine Defoe's move from Spurs to Portsmouth and Middlesbrough's purchase of Brazilian striker Afonso Alves.
