Gerrard admits players are affected by rumours

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has admitted that off-the-field speculation about the future of the club is affecting the players.

Rumours of takeover bids and uncertainty surrounding the future of manager Rafael Benitez are taking their toll, according to Gerrard, who played in the disappointing home draw against Aston Villa on January 21st.

Anfield's faithful voiced their disapproval of American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett during the game and Gerrard told the BBC that all the speculation is damaging the team.

"It's not just this week, it's been going on for some time and it's certainly not helping the players," he said.

"I've got to be careful what I say, but it's certainly not helping the team."

Manager Rafael Benitez appeared to have his position at Liverpool undermined last week when Mr Hicks revealed that Jurgen Klinsmann had been approached as an "insurance policy" should the Spaniard leave the club.

Benitez has remained silent over the matter and told the BBC after the draw with Villa that he is trying to ignore the press speculation.

"I really don't have too much information. I just keep preparing for games and try to win every game. I am trying not to think about this," he said.
