Rangers plan Ibrox expansion

Glasgow Rangers chairman Sir David Murray is considering rebuilding Ibrox into a state-of-the-art new stadium, it has been announced.

Three proposals are being considered, one of which would see the current stadium almost completely transformed with only the brick facade of the category B listed Bill Struth Main Stand being preserved.

Under this plan, the capacity of Ibrox would be increased from 50,411 by 40 per cent and the resulting bowl-shaped stadium would house 70,000 fans - making it the second biggest club ground in Britain behind Old Trafford.

Regardless of the option taken, the name of the stadium will be changed to that of a new corporate sponsor to finance some of the cost of the £700 million redevelopment.

"We are analysing a variety of proposals along with development of the existing outline planning for Hinshelwood," the club said in a statement.

"Full details will be announced at the appropriate time."

It is thought that the club will ask to play home games at Hampden Park for two years while construction work is taking place.
