MP laments lack of transport services for football fans

An MP has tabled a motion in parliament calling for better public transport services to be provided for football fans over the festive season.

While Selby MP John Grogan acknowledged that Merseytravel, West Midlands and Greater Manchester Passenger Transport authorities and Transport For London have made an effort to put on bus services on Boxing Day, he noted that many other authorities had failed to follow suit.

In York, for instance, the city's largest bus operator is not running services on Boxing Day - meaning residents without a car hoping to travel to a match will be forced to rely on taxis.

"Why should football fans be able to use the bus in many cities but not in Sheffield, Leeds, Bradford or York?" Mr Grogan asked in the motion.

"If such a service had been running this year perhaps many more York City fans might have made the trip to KitKat Crescent to see their Boxing Day league game against Droylsden."

Mr Grogan also pointed out that football fans across the country will be inconvenienced by disruption to the train timetables.

"This House expresses its deep disappointment that once again during this festive season the UK's railways will undergo a 58-hour shutdown," he continued, according to the York Press.

Mr Grogan's motion was backed by 28 members of parliament.
